It’s fueling a huge rollout of new retirement products — but they’re not all golden tickets. “We didn’t really save much of anything.”However, jobs offering pension plans are harder to come by compared to previous decades. Over the past 40 years, defined contribution plans, also known as 401(k) plans, have taken their place. Americans currently hold over $7 trillion in 401(k) plans, according to data from the Investment Company Institute, a trade association. These types of retirement plans put the job of saving and investing on the employee.

Warren Buffett walks the floor ahead of the Berkshire Hathaway Annual Shareholders Meeting in Omaha, Nebraska on May 3, 2024. OMAHA, Nebraska — Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway cut its gigantic Apple stake in the first quarter as the "Oracle of Omaha" continued to downsize his one-time favorite bet. In its first-quarter earnings report, Berkshire Hathaway reported that its Apple bet was worth $135.4 billion, implying around 790 million shares. It sold about 10 million Apple shares (just 1% of its massive stake) in the fourth quarter. When it came to housing, Susan Apel and Keith Irwin thought they had planned adroitly for later life. They bought a four-bedroom house on two acres in Lebanon, N.H., 24 years ago, and “we made sure to pay off the mortgage before we retired,” said Ms. Apel, 71. Ms. Apel, a retired law professor, is having trouble climbing stairs. Mr. Irwin, 71, previously an account manager for a local business, is wearying of yard work and snow shoveling, and finding workers to do those chores instead has become difficult. “We’re seeing the writing on the wall,” Ms. Apel said.

Indeed, according to new research from economists at the Federal Housing Finance Agency, this lock-in effect is responsible for about 1.3 million fewer home sales in America during the run-up in rates from the spring of 2022 through the end of 2023. That’s a startling number in a nation where around five million homes sell annually in more normal times — most of those to people who already own. These locked-in households haven’t relocated for better jobs or higher pay, and haven’t been able to downsize or acquire more space. They also haven’t opened up homes for first-time buyers. And that’s driven up prices and gummed up the market.

78% of home-owning baby boomers plan to age in their current homes, a Redfin survey found. Financial incentives are keeping boomers put, with current mortgage rates and home prices too high. That's not good news for housing supply, which is already dwindling at historic lows. Politicians should focus on expanding housing stock that meets the needs of older Americans, which could help with housing affordability and availability for all," Fairweather added. Prospective homebuyers could see some inventory relief as mortgage rates continue to gradually fall through this year, bringing back sellers.

Despite enticing alternatives, a fixed-rate mortgage remains the best option for us. With mortgage interest rates still close to 7%, alternative mortgages like adjustable-rate loans and mortgages with shorter maturities are gaining in popularity. AdvertisementThe beauty of the fixed-rate mortgage is that it offers certainty in an uncertain world. Any gain somebody might get with a lower interest rate might be offset by paying more for the house. So, we will be sticking with a fixed-rate mortgage and shopping around for the best rate.

Like Frieden, they're having a hard time finding what they need on the market. Frieden says she's surprised developers aren't doing more to meet the demand, particularly at the higher end of the market. Empty-nest boomers now own twice as many large homes as millennials with kids do, according to a recent Redfin analysis. This is making it even harder for millennials and households with kids to break into the market or upsize their homes. AdvertisementThis misallocation of housing — and shortage of larger condos and apartments — will become increasingly urgent as boomers age in homes that aren't ideal — or even safe — for them.

They were moved straight to our shiny new storage unit, and the plan was to move them into our temporary rental a few weeks later. Wouldn't it be better to show our apartment if we didn't have boxes in the way and there was less clutter everywhere? We decided to leave the boxes in the storage unit for the moment. All of a sudden, week by week, we were making pilgrimages to the storage unit, tossing out boxes we could live without. It still wasn't good timing for real estate, so we moved the lot of it into a smaller storage unit and immediately lopped hundreds of dollars a month from our budget.

Be on the lookout for new packaging, shop store brands, and keep track of the unit pricing to avoid losing money to shrinkflation. Buy store brandsStore brands typically have cheaper prices than the major brands that you find on store shelves. Think Kirkland brand at Costco or the store brands in Walgreens or Walmart. Because store brands are already generally the cheaper options, they will also be slower to repackage or downsize their products. For example, a 30-ounce jar of pickles that costs $8 would list a unit price of $0.27 per ounce.

While supply chain problems and high demand may have helped spur inflation early in the pandemic, Rosolino believes there’s another key reason why prices have soared and remained high: Corporate greed. It’s corporate greed.”Nick Rosolino feels businesses won't lower their prices as long as consumers keep spending. “Too many corporations raise prices to pad their profits, charging more and more for less and less,” Biden said. Companies are typically slower to reduce their prices when costs decline than they are to raise prices when their expenses jump. Corporate profits have contributed to inflation, though experts differ on the extent.

Fewer Americans are moving within the US, and boomer homeowners in more expensive states may explain why. Over the last few decades, US internal migration has fallen substantially. Census data shows internal migration has slowed since the 1970s amid deindustrialization and a weaker economy. "This suggests that declining internal migration is due to changes in structural aspects of migration choice, which affect individuals and families of many different backgrounds," the authors wrote. Net migration has been strongest out of California, Illinois, Massachusetts, New Jersey, and New York, which have relatively high wages and housing prices.

In January, the law firm Crowell & Moring traded its New York offices in an early 1980s building in Midtown Manhattan for a newly built space on the West Side, with sweeping views of the Hudson River and New York Harbor. The law firm’s previous office layout was “essentially wasted space,” said Philip T. Inglima, the firm’s chairman. Crowell & Moring makes better use of the square footage in its new location, which includes features like sit-to-stand desks, video technology for hybrid meetings and double-pane glass for soundproofing, Mr. Inglima said. Larger law firms nationwide have been shedding space even as they have added lawyers. “We don’t have everybody in the office all the time, and that’s why we don’t necessarily need that larger footprint,” said Sharis A. Pozen, the law firm Clifford Chance’s regional managing partner, for the Americas.

German food delivery giant Delivery Hero announced it has ended negotiations with an undisclosed third party regarding the potential sale of its Foodpanda business in selected Southeast Asian markets, where it is attempting to downsize. In a press release on Wednesday, Delivery Hero said the relevant parties failed to agree on the terms. "The decision to terminate negotiations after months of discussions was taken after careful consideration," said Niklas Östberg, CEO and co-founder of Delivery Hero.
